5K seat Citrix XenDesktop on Hyper-V and NetApp reference architecture

It has been fun to work with my Citrix friends Seth Roth, Drew Tipton, Roland Lee and my NetApp friends Neil Glick, Will Strickland and Rob Briggs on this 5 thousand seat reference architecture.  Happy reading!

This reference architecture documents the design, deployment, and validation of a Citrix Desktop Virtualization solution which included Microsoft Hyper-V and SCVMM 2012, HP blade servers, NetApp storage arrays, and Cisco networking.

It was found that a single NetApp FAS3270 storage could reliably host storage for at least 2020 XenDesktop 5.6 virtual desktop VMs virtualized on Hyper-V using the iSCSI storage protocol.

NetApp FAS3240 storage were utilized for the common infrastructure storage in this environment. These storage systems hosted iSCSI LUNs for the common infrastructure Hyper-V Cluster, SQL database storage, and User Profile storage. They also hosted NFS volumes for test client storage.

Next phase, we will work on a large scale Xendesktop reference architecture with NetApp clustered OnTap.
